Who Should Have This Screening

  • Age 65
  • Age 50 with one or more of the following risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, heart disease, strong family history of vascular disease

What Is Included

The screening includes:

  • Carotid ultrasound
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Follow up call with a nurse

Why You Should Not Have This Screening

If you have the following, you should not have a Vascular Screening:

  • History of carotid artery disease or previous carotid surgery or stents
  • History of an abdominal aortic aneurysm or aortic aneurysm surgery
  • History of stents or surgery on arteries in your legs

Screening Details and What to Do Before You Come

During the screening:

  • You will complete a form with information about your health history.
  • A cardiac sonographer or nurse with specialized cardiac training will place a small, hand-held device, called a transducer, on several points of your neck and abdomen. A clinician will also take blood pressure measurements in your arms and legs.

The day before the screening, have nothing to eat or drink after midnight. The screening will take about 45 minutes.

Your Vascular Screening Locations

Jackson – Directly across from Baptist Heart in Outpatient Cardiovascular Diagnostics, Suite 100, in Colonnades medical office building on the campus of Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

Madison – 401 Baptist Drive, Suite 406 in Madison 

A member of the clinical staff at one of the Baptist Heart locations will take you through the steps of the Vascular Screening. When you are finished, he or she will enter the information into an electronic record for a clinic physician to evaluate.

When you are finished, your results will be available via MyChart within three business days.

If You Have Questions About Your Results

We will mail your completed screening report to you, usually in about three weeks. If your results indicate a need for immediate follow up, a member of our cardiovascular team will call you at the telephone number you provided. If you have questions about your results, we recommend you discuss them with your primary physician by sending a MyChart message.

When You Come For Your Screening

In Jackson, park in the parking lot at the Colonnades medical office building. Check in at Outpatient Cardiovascular Diagnostics, located in Suite 100 on the first floor level of the building. To get to Suite 100, go up one floor in the elevator from the Ground Level. This is directly across from the Baptist Heart clinic.

In Madison, park in the parking lot nearest the 401 medical office building. Enter the main building and go to the 4th floor.  Baptist Heart is at the end of the hall in Suite 406.

About Baptist's Screening Programs

  1. Specific health criteria apply for all screenings. Participants will be asked qualifying information during registration.
  2. Screening packages are available by appointment and are evaluated by Baptist Heart nurses and physicians.
  3. Reports may be sent to you and the physician of your choice.
  4. Insurance is not filed for most screening packages. Payment is through cash, check or credit card at both Baptist Heart locations.
